Welcome to Authors to Watch, Debbie. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I live in California with my husband of 39 years, and two adorable rescue dachshunds, Dash and Briar! We have two adult children, and two granddaughters – who all reside on the east coast. How did we end up in California you ask? We both grew up here, and after high school, my husband joined the Air Force. We traveled like most military families ending up in South Carolina for our last tour. We retired there, and made it our home. When our parents became elderly and needed help, we decided to move back to care for them. We miss our children and grandchildren, but it was the right decision to move back. I currently work for the government and will be eligible to retire next year.

Can you tell us about your current release?

The Salty Dog takes place in a small fishing community along the coast. Luke and Libby invest in a salmon boat and a small diner that the locals love when an event even Libby couldn’t have prepared for leaves her running both businesses. It’s about a strong, independent woman who never gives up – even in love! My husband’s brother owned a commercial fishing boat and he worked on it during the summer months when he was a teenager. He told me about his experience working on the boat, and I, like any good writer embellished the stories somewhat to make them more interesting. However, some of it is accurate. You’ll have to read the book to see if you can figure out his input!

Of all your characters, which one is your favorite? Why?

I’ve created characters that are likeable. I tried to make them feel like they are the friend next door, or one you may have had in the past. If I had to pick just one, I’d pick Libby. However, I really like Avery as well.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing your book?

Writing the story comes easy to me, finding the time however is not. Making sure my characters are fully developed is one of the most challenging aspects for me. I want to make sure the readers feel a connection with them. I also think editing is challenging, and time consuming.

What is your primary goal as an author?

To engage the reader in the story, and leave them with some feeling or thoughts after they’ve finished it – I want them to be entertained. In addition, I want them to feel like the book was worth their hard-earned money. That’s very important to me.
