The Mark of Noba Cover (1)

The Mark of Noba (The Sterling Wayfairer Series #1) by GL Tomas

Sterling Wayfairer has one goal for his senior year: make his mark. He’s been slipping into the background his whole high school career—distracted by his mother’s mental health, unsettled by the vivid dreams that haunt him at night, and overshadowed by the athletic accomplishments of his popular best friends. But this year is going to be different. He’s going to break a few rules, have some fun, and maybe even work up the nerve to ask his crush out on a date.

But things don’t go exactly as planned. Students are disappearing, Sterling starts losing time, and it all seems to center around Tetra, a girl no one else seems to notice but him. When he finally tracks her down for answers, they aren’t what he expects: He and Tetra hail from a world called Noba, and they’re being hunted by a Naga, a malevolent shapeshifter that’s marked them for destruction.

Tetra and Sterling have distinct abilities that can help them fight back, but their power depends heavily on the strength of their bond, a connection that transcends friendship, transcends romance. Years apart have left their bond weak. Jumpstarting it will require Sterling to open his heart and his mind and put his full trust in the mysterious Tetra.

If he doesn’t, neither of them will survive.

Noba teaser 5

My Review: Sterling is always in trouble. His parents are furious he’s broken curfew – again. Something weird happened at school, and he was blamed for it. And there are strange lapses in time he can’t explain. But things are going to get worse. Much worse. When Tetra begins popping in and out of his life, Sterling fears he’s losing his mind. She claims to be from another world and says the two of them share a unique bond. If they are going to defeat their enemy, Sterling is going to have to accept the truth of who he is and learn to control the power inside him.

I loved this book so much, it’s hard to know where to begin with this review. I’ll start with Sterling because it was his unique voice that hooked me from the very beginning. He’s such a fun character. He’s clever, engaging, and easy to relate to. In addition to typical teen struggles (trying to fit it, not being as athletic as his friends, crushing on a hot girl who seems to have him in the friend zone), he’s also dealing with a mentally ill parent. Sterling’s point of view is often amusing and always authentic. His character is very well written.

Tetra is harder to relate to. She’s from another world, so her tone is more formal. Her way of looking at the world and relating to others is the opposite of Sterling, so their alternating points of view really work in this story. As Tetra learns to adjust to the world she’s in, she shows the vulnerability hidden behind her strength.

In terms of diversity, this book earns an easy five stars. It’s refreshing to read a book where diversity is the norm and color of skin has nothing to do with race. Sexuality is dealt with in a matter of fact way, and gender roles are explored through Tetra’s introspection.

The world-building in this book is among the best I’ve ever seen. It’s a very well-written book I would highly recommend. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars!!!

EXCERPT:

Layna hurried in, her eyes connecting with Mikael as soon as his apartment door closed behind her.

“I came as soon as I got your message.” Concern etched her face. “What’s wrong? Your message said it was important.”

Layna’s heart rate had skyrocketed when she received the text from Mikael telling her it was an emergency and to come to his apartment as soon as possible.

Expecting to see chaos as soon as she entered, Layna stopped and took a deep breath noticing for the first time that everything looked calm, including the sender of the text.

Something was not right here.

“Mikael, what’s wrong?”

His blue eyes were chilly and his usually messy black hair was styled perfectly giving him a debonair look. She asked as she realized he was dressed in business attire. Mikael’s usual style was rocker meets prep. He left her and other girls drooling when he wore his trademark tight black tee and faded blue jeans. Although the black suit fit his lean, muscular six–foot-plus frame nicely it also made him look cold and detached. She had jokingly referred to it as his LockRidge armor. He only wore his ‘armor’ when he had to deal with his father.

Eternal Curse: Giovanni’s Angel

Eternal Curse: Giovanni’s Angel

Eternal Curse Series Book 1

By Toi Thomas

ec

“You have plenty of time to change your mind. You have not yet seen the monster I can be.”

Giovanni has been waiting his whole life to meet someone like Mira, someone from the outside world who might be able to help him. He wonders if there really is help for him as he continues to hold tightly onto dark secrets and even darker memories. Giovanni wants to be hopeful and he wants to accept Mira’s help, but first he has to look himself in the mirror and face what he truly is- and that is a reality no one is quite ready to accept.

Searching for new purpose and meaning in her life, Mira meets Giovanni online and an exciting and, in some ways scary, friendship is developed. Mira decides one day to meet Giovanni in person, at his secluded country home, in order to aid him on his journey of self-discovery. What these two are able to discover will not only test their strength and will, but it will stretch the limits of their minds and catapult them into a world where earth, Heaven, and Hell collide.

Giovanni’s Angel is the story of a man who may just be the answer to a spiritual war swiftly heading his way- but for now, he just wants to be a man.

My Review: When Mira agrees to help the mysterious Giovanni, she has no idea what she’s getting  herself into. Giovanni is desperate for someone to help him figure out what makes him so different, in appearance and in certain abilities and strengths. Mira is a brilliant doctor who is willing to put her personal and professional life on hold in order to help him. Friendship evolves between Mira, Giovanni, and his old friend Abraham. The three build bonds of trust, but there is still a huge secret waiting in the wings – who Giovanni really is and what he can become. Until Mira has all the pieces of the puzzle, she can’t truly help Giovanni. And until Giovanni can learn to accept himself, he can’t expect Mira to accept him either.

This story is part medical mystery, part romance with a rich paranormal storyline at the heart of it. The story also delves into many philosophical issues. What makes a man a man? How is evil defined? Can you love another person if you can’t love yourself? I loved the characters in this story, particularly Mira. She’s intelligent, compassionate, and independent. Despite her independence, she’s as alone and isolated as Giovanni. She’s never felt like she truly belonged anywhere, and she’s never known a sense of family. As she becomes more and more attached to Giovanni and Abraham, you can see how her vulnerabilities affect her, especially when she feels like secrets are being kept from her.

Both Gio and Mira undergo serious transformation in this book as they learn from each other and from a tragic loss. This book was a very enjoyable read and I was sorry for it to end. Fortunately, the sequel is being released soon! I’d recommend this book to readers who are looking for a thought-provoking story with diverse characters and a unique twist.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Want to know more?

Here’s the Blurb!

The Beast of Callaire: Yasmin is a descendant of the Manticore. A creature of Persian mythology. A Legendary.

But she doesn’t want to be. Unlike the Legendaries in The Red, Yasmin wants nothing more than an ordinary life. She tries to fool herself into believing that she doesn’t change into a beast every full moon and savagely kill innocent people.

But when Yasmin starts hearing a voice in her head and is drawn into dreams that aren’t her own, she is led to Fray—a girl who once saved Yasmin from hunters, who has shadowy memories that hint at her having Legendary magic—and Yasmin is catapulted into a life of Majick and malevolence.

Despite the danger around her and Fray, Yasmin might finally have a chance at being a normal girl with a normal girlfriend. But with Legendaries being killed, a war between the Gods brewing, and the beast inside Yasmin becoming stronger each moon, her mundane life is little more than a dream.

Check out an Excerpt from The Beast of Callaire!

Symbols have been smeared in red on the wall over my bed—the same language as the words I saw lit up on the building across the alley. The words the original Phoenix confirmed to be the language of Gods.

Without really thinking about it, I start running through my apartment looking for anything else out of place, avoiding what’s in front of me. I feel my breathing quicken and I know I need to calm down but right now calm is elusive.

“It’s a warning,” Guy says, his voice edged in ice.

“How do you know?” I plead with my legs to hold me up as I dizzily return to my room. The liquid used to write the symbols is definitely blood—my Crea nose can smell the tang from here. Thankfully, it’s not human.

“Mavers has been teaching me to read Numina,” Guy tells me. “Do you want to know what it says?”

“No.”

“It says to stay away from the Halfling or more Legendaries will die.”

Air rushes from my lungs all at once. “Fray.”

I disobey the warning without a second thought, rushing outside and tearing across the road, uncaring of traffic. When I reach the wood’s edge, I rip off my talisman and reach out for Fray. Guy catches up just as I’m screaming for her.

The muscles in my thighs strain with how hard I’m pushing myself. I don’t want to admit the truth to myself—that something is irreversibly wrong. I hear no static from Fray’s mind and there isn’t a single scared thought from her.

I unleash the monster I fight so hard to repress and scream a hostile growl into the woods. Guy flinches beside me.

Talons unfurl from my fingers. My vision sharpens all at once and I know I look beastly, that my eyes are the most golden they’ve ever been.

None of that matters.

Here’s the Blurb and Excerpt from the book:

What happens with the night team…

Felicity ‘Fliss’ Pecora didn’t like people. Her background meant she didn’t trust easily and the night shift suited her perfectly. Forced to go on a team night out she bumps into the one person who knew her at her worst.

Teddy couldn’t believe the foul mouthed girl he once knew had changed so little, but still he felt an attraction towards her. He helped her overcome her insecurities and health scare and they were happy and in love until the night their pasts collided.

To love her, was to let her go. But could he?

Call Me Lucky

Excerpt from “Call Me Lucky”

She ran past the strapping black bouncer at the entrance, around the side of the building and past a bunch of wheelie bins before stopping and throwing up against the building. Oh God it was horrible. They didn’t like her. Her body crumpled against the wall and she pressed her forehead into it, feeling the rough brick bite into her skin. Any pain was better than the feeling of her dreams shattering.

“Fliss!” It was Mackenzie. She didn’t want to talk to him. Not like this, not when she had failed. It was his fault anyway. She would never have put herself through this if he hadn’t dared her.

“Fliss!”

“I’m here,” She called out quickly, wiping away the water from her eyes. They were not tears she told herself.

“Why did you run you nit?” He admonished softly, pulling her into his arms and hugging her tight. “They loved you.”

“Yeah right,” she said pulling free and sniffing loudly. “Loved me enough they couldn’t bring themselves to even clap Mac.”

“They didn’t get a—” he didn’t finish what he was about to say as a man in dark jeans, white shirt and dark leather jacket walked towards them.

“If I didn’t see it with my own eyes I’d have never believed chavvy Felicity Pecora could render my customers speechless.”

Fliss gaped into the darkness knowing that voice, but refusing to believe it.

“What? Got nothing to say? This is a first,” he chuckled and, stepping closer, held out his hand to Mackenzie. “Theodore Nicholson. But everyone calls me Teddy,” he explained. “Felicity and I grew up together.”

Mackenzie shook his hand. “Mackenzie. Nice to meet you. Are you coming back in Fliss? They want more.”

Fliss shook her head in horror. There was no way she was going back inside. She’d done what she said she would do, gave it a go and took a bite of her apple. They didn’t like her and she wasn’t about to make the same mistake again.

“Can you give us a minute Mackenzie?” Teddy asked.

“Yeah, course mate.” Mackenzie stepped away. “You were amazing Fliss. See ya in a bit.”

Could this night get any worse. Teddy Nicholson was stood right in front of her, once again, at the lowest point of her life. World open up and suck me right in, she begged silently.

“Well?”

He’d used that same word with that same menacing tone that night all those years ago, she remembered with shame.

“Well what?” She questioned defensively, stalling.

“Well what are you doing in my pub for one thing?” Teddy asked, leaning against the wall and fishing into his jacket pocket for the one cigarette he allowed himself each week. It wasn’t there.

She turned to look at him but he was in profile and she could barely see him in the darkness. “I’m in London,” she mumbled.

“I noticed.”

She was fifteen again. Spotty, ugly and fat. Reduced to the bumbling teenager who’d been crying in the jitty at the back of the house as he’d shouted at her mother for having sex with his brother Marty. He’d threatened to call the police and social services on them. He’d been so angry and had left through the back gate, finding her huddled against the fence.

He’d reduced her to even more tears by the time he’d finished with her and when she’d just about crumbled at his feet, he’d taken a huge breath, shoved his hands through his hair and then given her a long pep talk that basically said, if he could get out then so could she.

“We won a trip,” she admitted quietly. “From work.”

He moved then, turning to stand in front of her, his head cocked to one side as he looked her over. He looked at her feet in sparkly ballet shoes, her legs in dark skinny jeans and a sparkly silvery top with tiny straps over her shoulders. Her hair was in a tight bun, set high on top of her head. It looked like she had a silky doughnut on her head.

“You look really nice Felicity.”

“What?” She snapped defensively, folding her arms over her chest. “You thought I’d still be wearing my charity labels Teddy?”

He frowned down at her. He’d always felt guilty for laying into her the way he had done that night behind her house. She couldn’t help the way her mother was or the environment she lived in. He’d just been so mad that her mother had got money out of his baby brother for sex. Stealing his innocence.

“Maybe,” Teddy shrugged. “Why deny it?”

Her eyes flashed and she poked him in the chest. “I’m not a kid any more Teddy.” She lifted her chin and stared straight at him.

“Really?” He sounded sceptical. “You’ve changed?” He was remembering the scrawny kid with the foul mouth.

She took a shuddering breath knowing he didn’t really believe her. Not that she cared what he thought.

“Yes really,” she snapped. “Look, can you go and get my friends please. I’m not going back in there,” she admitted tightly.

“You were sensational Felicity.” He smiled down at her. “My crowd loved you.”

“Yeah right,” she scoffed. “They loved me so much my ears are still ringing from all the appreciation they showed!” She finished on a wobble. She was not going to get emotional, especially in front of him! “And why do you keep saying your crowd?”

“I own the place,” he admitted. “And they were struck dumb by how good you sounded and not expecting it. Jesus Christ Fliss! Where does that voice come from? It’s amazing.”

“Stop lying Teddy.”

“I’m not lying. They want more!” He grabbed her hand. “Come on let’s go.”

“Are you fucking crazy?” She yanked violently out of his grasp and stepped away from him. It was beginning to drizzle. It had drizzled that infamous night too.

He grinned at her. “Ah, now, here is the Felicity I know,” he laughed. “I could always depend on your, dare I say, vocabulary to lower the tone of any conversation.”

“You can say what the fu-hell you like.” Why was she letting herself down like this, she thought, fighting the tears. “Please Teddy, go and get my friends. I’m getting wet.”

“Only if you promise to come back tomorrow night and do a whole set. When are you going back up to Notts?”

“We’ve got another night,” she said without thinking. “And I’m never going on stage again.”

“Come back tomorrow and have dinner with me then.”

“No. Why? So you can laugh at me. No thanks,” she questioned and answered all at once.

He chuckled deep in his throat. “I want to know what’s been going on with you, I’m curious that’s all.”

“You can take you’re curiosity and sh—”

“How old are you?” He cut in and watched with amusement as a shade of red touched her cheeks. She’d always been fiery. She’d always fascinated him.

Fliss felt like an idiot. She didn’t know why she was behaving like this in front of him.

“Twenty.”

“Hmm. Come, I’ll buy you a drink before you go.” He took her hand.

“I don’t drink.” She grumbled.

He stopped walking and turned to look at her in that intent way of his, with his head to one side. He nodded silently and then did what he’d done all those years ago. With one hand he cupped her face and used his thumb to stroke her cheek. A tender moment from him. He shook his head as though getting rid of unwanted thoughts and dragged her inside.

Tricia’s Review of Fire Baptized:

When Lanore is a witness to a horrific crime, she embarks on a mission to solve the mystery. A target herself, Lanore is desperate to save her loved ones from a vicious killer. Will she discover the identity of the murderer before it’s too late, or will she have to make an unthinkable sacrifice in order to save her friends?

What’s not to love about this book? It’s violent, sexy, and magical. The world-building is top notch. Lanore is the type of character I love. She’s intelligent, street-smart, funny, and courageous. She can kick butt when necessary, but still displays compassion and vulnerability. In other words, she’s a well-rounded, well-crafted heroine.

If you’re in the market for a new book-boyfriend, Fire Baptized has two hot, gorgeous men to choose from. Lanore has strong feelings for her ex (MeShack) and growing attraction for Zulu, the powerful, overprotective shifter who is head over heels for her. She can’t fight her feelings (or lust) forever. There are some seriously steamy scenes in this book, so romance lovers will not be disappointed.

This book was absolutely phenomenal and had me glued to the pages. I read the last half of the book in one sitting, and I can’t think of anything that could have pulled me away. Did I mention I love this book? Honestly, it’s one of the best urban fantasy books I’ve ever read. It’s that awesome! You should read it. Now.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars! (I’d give it more if I could)
