Excerpt from Scarred Protector

Heath’s wings erupted instantly from his back as he swooped down from the car park roof and caught Evie in his arms before she hit the ground. A fall from that height would have killed her and he refused to lose another person. It had been hundreds of years since he had lost someone before and it wasn’t happening now. Not on his watch and in his area.

Lightening cracked through the sky and his whole body tingled as if he was absorbing the energy as he grabbed her. For a moment he wasn’t sure if the energy was coming from her and not from around them as they hovered unmoving. It didn’t matter for now. Charles would be out of action and paralyzed from the waist down, but it wouldn’t last for long. He needed to get Evie over to Pergor and get her a guardian before any more demonic Midworlders showed up. Fighting one he could cope with, but fighting a group of them would incapacitate him for too long.

Something else was up as well as his messages were not getting through to his enclave. Help wouldn’t be coming anytime soon. The last thing he said to his people was he had received a message from an Angelic about to pass over, and that she had found a human in distress. If he had known the distress was that the human didn’t have a guardian he would have brought a whole crew with him to protect her.

There were a lot of questions he needed to ask this female. That wasn’t going to happen in hurry as she had passed out. He wasn’t sure if it was from the fact she had been caught by a man with wings or the burst of energy. As he peered at her he could swear he could see little sparks of energy all around her. It made her glow like a light bulb. His own body still tingled from the burst. He could recover from being hit by lightning but he wasn’t sure how a human would cope.

Of course she might have passed out because most humans don’t have this sort of thing happening to them. He had picked up from her mind she had just lost her father. To be coping with such grief and the attack from Charles made him admire this woman’s tenacity. She had brought a smile to his face when he had seen her boot connect with Charles’s groin.

He stopped ascending into the sky and hovered and allowed himself a moment of reflection as he gazed down at her face. What was going on here? She cradled against his chest and he had to admit he liked the sensation. He didn’t touch people unless he had to and had forgotten what it felt like to have a human pressed against you. It brought out protectiveness in him.

Her reached up and touched her cheek with his fingertips. The glow was gone from around her body, but the tingle still remained. She felt warm, too warm, as if she was running a fever. He moved his hand away surprised at himself. He never let his emotions show and yet he felt drawn to this strange woman with the wet and bedraggled fuzzy hair. It must have been the jolt of lightening affecting him. She looked so vulnerable and yet he had seen her be tough against Charles. She hadn’t known what she was taking on but she had fought well. He didn’t know her but he liked her feistiness. It was irrelevant. He needed to stop these pointless contemplations and concentrate on saving her.

The other people in Pergor who he would ask questions of were never keen to give answers, but answers were what he needed. He had seen what the people from his Homeworld were like this past year. His friend, Ridge, in America had found his life partner, but had struggled to get any information from Pergor, their outpost between Earth and home used to be a place of solace but these days distrust was the word he would use to describe it. When Ridge had gone to Pergor with Nicole, no responses had been forthcoming and they had even attacked her or had been willing for her to die. In that instance her Angelic guardian had been removed by Sayell, a demonic Midworlder. How the hell did Evie end up without a guardian at all? It didn’t make sense. How long had she been like it? He had to assume Charles had been as surprised as him or he would have brought his own back up as well. More questions.

Thunder roared around him as he opened his mind to form the conduit to Pergor. The lightning and thunder became faint as the sky grew dark and starless around them. He would not let anyone hurt her. He would die protecting her if he had to. After all dying would be a relief from this existence of coping with the failure of the past.

“What the fuck is happening?” Evie yelled.

Heath peered down and even in the darkness he could see she was wide eyed as she struggled to get away and pushed against his chest. There was no tranquil female in his arms now. Where she thought she was going was beyond him as they were high above the ground. To be honest he couldn’t blame her for freaking out. He had to consider what to say next. At this close range he could try and convince her to hand over her thoughts to him, but he already had a feeling she would not be willing to do that after everything she had seen so far.

“We’re leaving Earth, to go somewhere to get you a guardian angel,” he said, as he flapped his wings as the stars started to disappear around them. He hovered in the space between worlds not yet able to make the contact with Pergor. He could feel the pain start to build in his temple knowing the connection was trying to form.

She thumped his chest as she wriggled and yelled. “If a guardian angel is what I’ve seen on people for years, I don’t want one. Half of them are dark creatures waiting to kill whatever they see and the other half look like self-serving pixies after what they can get, so get stuffed and take me home. I just want to be left alone.”

What she said just added more questions to the list. “Evie. There’s nowhere for you to go. You can’t stay here between the worlds, and I won’t let you go back or you will be found again by Charles and his associates. I offer the only alternative.” She huffed but stopped wriggling. He changed his mind and considered she was more annoyed than scared. “I want to reassure you I’m not associated with those dark guardians.”

“You sure? You look pretty dark to me. If I have to choose I’ll go with a pixie angel like dad had. Will it keep that creep Charles away from me?”

“I will certainly try to get you an Angelic guardian, and no, Charles won’t be able to touch you then. You have to trust me while I take you to a place not of this world. I know it is a lot to ask after what has happened, but you should give your mind over to me.”

“You can take me wherever you want as I don’t seem to have much choice. Go for it, but I’m not giving my mind over to anyone. Trust me you wouldn’t want to be in there anyway. You lot think you’re dark and yet you don’t know anything.” Evie mumbled, as she shook her head as if to rid herself of a buzzing bee. “If you knew my life you wouldn’t even be suggesting going anywhere near my mind.”

She grabbed on tight around his neck and his whole body tingled in the same way it had when they had been in the middle of the lightening. He needed to concentrate on making the connection with Pergor, but instead he found he was thinking more about how Evie smelt as she held her face close to his. She had the aroma of lemon and vanilla and he closed his eyes as he drew her cent in as she pressed close to his chest. It had been a long time since he had felt anything more than the general need to protect. He wanted to make things right for this human as he sent his thoughts out to the post on Pergor. He could feel himself harden which often happened when their wings came out; the difference was he felt it was the closeness of this woman affecting him. He never let such basic instincts take over and yet again wondered what was happening with this female.

Seducing the Sun Fae, excerpt

As the scene begins, Cleia, queen of the sun fae, has lured Dion, a sexy Latino shifter, to her home. Unbeknownst to her, Dion is alpha of the local river fada clan. He’s there to take down the beautiful fae queen. The first step is to seduce her…

Cleia settled onto a nearby chair, her arm resting on the back and her leg slung over one of its arms in a pose so casual it bordered on insulting. “Did you eat, Dion?”

“A little. But food can wait—unless you’re hungry?”

“I had something while you were in the shower.”

She took a sip of her wine, and then propped her head on one hand, regarding him as if he were a tasty young fillet to be served to her on a platter. He deliberately tamped down his power even more, sending it instead into the gathering storm, which also served the purpose of increasing the cover for the two Rock Run warriors waiting just outside the compound. Sun fae hated getting wet. Everyone but the guards would’ve taken cover by now.

Cleia sighed and suddenly he understood what was wrong. She didn’t want harmless. She wanted danger.

The lady was bored with men who danced to her tune.

Ah. He’d be happy to provide the queen with a little…excitement.

He crouched on his haunches in front of her and put out his hand. “Give me your foot.”

She hesitated and he waited, unmoving. In this dance, she would learn that he was the leader, she the follower.

She slanted him a look from under her lashes and then, setting her wine on the floor, placed a slender foot in his palm. It was clad in a jewel-encrusted sandal: rubies, emeralds, diamonds. The fae loved bright, glittering things. He concealed a sneer. A good-sized family could live on the proceeds of just a few of those jewels for a year.

It was yet another weakness, something he could use against the shallow, party-girl queen.

Right now she wasn’t thinking about jewels, though. Her gaze was all for him. Her hands clenched on her lap, but she held herself still, waiting to see what he’d do next.

Keeping his eyes on hers, he undid the sandal strap and slid his finger under her arch, tracing a slow path down the sensitive skin. Her breath hitched.

He removed the sandal and pressed a kiss to her instep, then placed her foot on the chair seat so that her knee was bent, opening her to him.

“Keep it there.”

Her throat worked but she obeyed.

He removed her other sandal with the same slow care. He pressed a kiss to that instep as well and it was only then that she released her breath in an audible whoosh.

His lips curved against her soft, citrus-scented skin. “You like that.”

Their eyes met and his own breath caught. Deus, her eyes were beautiful: a tawny, sun-touched brown.

“Mm,” she murmured. “More.” Their gazes locked and when he simply stared at her unmoving, she added, “Please.”

Triumph streaked through him. He’d won. She just didn’t know it yet.

“As you wish, querida,” he said and sucked her big toe into his mouth.

About the Author:

As a teenager, Rebecca Rivard read way too many romances, little realizing she was actually preparing for a career. After a detour through various genres, she has returned to her first love. Seducing the Sun Fae recently hit #1 in the Amazon free eBook store in paranormal and urban fantasy and #2 in fantasy romance.

Like the river fada in her series, Rebecca is happiest in or near the water, believes that the fae are beautiful but dangerous and could cheerfully exist in a world without TV–although not without her e-reader. She’s still trying to figure out what her superpower is.

Blaze

Excerpt from Releasing the Demons

Valerie kept her eyes locked on the glass windows covered with cigarette prices and beer ads, watching Tattoos pay up at the cash register. Once she reached the side of the building, she pressed her back against the warm brick wall. Sweat trickled down her spine and she wiped her clammy hands on her jeans before she drew her Beretta. She listened for the bell hanging above the store entrance, and when it jingled, she peered past the corner of the building.

There he is.

Holding a pack of Marlboros, he slipped it into his back pocket along with a silver money clip. He walked back toward the Chevelle, scanning the area one more time as he stepped off the concrete elevation.

This is it. Do it. Now!

With her gun pointed at the ground in a two-handed grip, Valerie pushed off the wall and turned the corner, staring at his back. Her voice was loud and clear as she called, “Blaze.”

He stopped and pivoted around. A fleeting expression of confusion filled his face, but it quickly turned into shock as she lifted her gun and shouted, “Freeze, NYPD!”

Gasps and shouts resounded as everyone turned their attention on her. Some people ducked while others gawked, and she wished they would just climb into their cars and get the hell out of here. She did her best to ignore them, keeping her focus solely on the man before her as she carefully approached him. He didn’t make any sudden movements, his brow furrowing as a muscle in his jaw ticked.

Valerie flashed her badge to prove she wasn’t bullshitting. “Get your hands in the air where I can see them.”

He slowly lifted his arms and spread his hands out wide. Then spoke with a voice like black gravel, matching his appearance all too well. “What’s going on here?”

She closed in on him, his presence becoming more and more overwhelming. Sirens resonated in the distance, sending a trickle of relief through her. He didn’t appear armed but that didn’t mean jack.

“Turn around and get down on the ground. Now!”

Anger consumed the confusion on his face but he surprisingly complied, giving her his back again before dropping to his knees with his hands above his head.

She kept her gun aimed and her mind submerged in the well of her calm. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d arrested someone; she usually shot to kill. “Cross your ankles,” she ordered, and he did so, crossing his booted ankles as if he’d done this before.

Valerie placed her foot in the space between his legs, so if he attempted to stand he would end up flat on his face. People finally backed away as she removed her tungsten carbide handcuffs from her utility belt, gripping the Beretta with knuckles white as chalk. Tungsten carbide was the only metal strong enough to hold a vampire, but she used it on everyone, regardless of species. Two New Rochelle cruisers whipped into the gas station, blocking off both exits before four officers leapt out of their respective vehicles. Valerie put the gun up and cuffed Blaze’s dominant hand, swinging his right arm around before latching onto the left.

He didn’t put up a fight. He didn’t even flinch. But he balled his big hands into fists at his back. She read him his Miranda rights as she cinched the cuffs around both of his thick wrists.

“You have the right to remain silent—”

“I have the right to know what’s going on,” he growled, showing her his savage profile.

“Anything you do or say can be used against you in a court of law.”

“What are you arresting me for?”

“You have the right to an attorney.”

“Fuck the attorney—”

She yanked the chain of his cuffs, bringing his solid body against her as the faint scent of cologne tickled her nose. She leaned into his ear, anger flashing through her as she thought of bloody grass and charred flesh.

“You’re under arrest for the murder of Elena Delgado. Now get the fuck up and move.”

Book of the Day: Shades of Gray

Today’s Book of the Day is

Shades of Gray (Amaranthine Book1)

by Joleene Naylor

1 - shades of gray - 250 (1)

When Patrick is murdered, Katelina is left with questions. Jorick, one of his so-called friends, has answers of the darkest kind: Patrick was involved with – and betrayed – a coven of vampires; vampires that may now be after Katelina.

The tale is fantastic, but the proof appears in a flash of fangs that Katelina and Jorick only just escape. Taken to a secret mansion, she discovers horror in its halls and learns the truth about her protector. Blood and destruction follow, and leave scars Katelina may never heal from.

The disturbing opener to the Amaranthine series pulls Katelina into darkness that tastes like fear and smells like blood, a world where night is eternal and vampires don’t sparkle.

Shades of Gray is currently free on Kindle and at other retailers. Grab your copy now: http://www.amazon.com/Shades-Gray-Amaranthine-Book-1-ebook/dp/B002RHP5D6/

Clash of Legends: Book Review

Clash of Legends

(Amaranthine Book 7)

By Joleene Naylor

81xBy5zVljL._SL1500_

The explosive seventh installment in the Amaranthine series brings blood, ruin, despair, and hope, for even in the darkest night there is still a moon.

After the battle in Indonesia. Katelina wakes in Samael’s domain. Though her memories are tattered, she knows someone is missing: Jorick.

Her vampire lover gathers an army to save her from the ancient, but his master Malick interferes. For five hundred years Malick has manipulated and ruined Jorick’s life. When he leaves Katelina broken and bleeding in the bowels of his oasis, it’s the final straw.

While Malick sets up his glorious war with a living legend, Jorick plans the ultimate taboo: to kill his master. He’s tried before and failed. Will this be different, or will he and Katelina be crushed in the carnage of a greater battle, between two whose blood goes back millennia?

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

My Review: Katelina, Jorick, and my other favorite vampires are back in what is probably the best book in the Amaranthine series. I know, I know. I say that about every book in this amazing series, but that’s because this series keeps getting better and better. Clash of Legends starts out strong with Katelina going from one dangerous situation to the next, and with a huge surprising twist early in the story. No, seriously! You really won’t expect this. Not in a million years.

Katelina is no longer the scared, confused young woman we met in the first book. She’s grown accustomed to this crazy world she’s a part of. While she doesn’t always agree with Jorick’s “adventures,” she’s not a passive participant. Katelina is independent and brave, and these qualities have earned the grudging respect of many. She’s even made a few of her own friends along the way.

Naylor kept me on my toes the entire book. The fast pace plot barreled toward an incredible ending. The only thing I didn’t like about this book is that it’s over! I can’t wait until the next book. I need more Amaranthine!

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

According to my twin brother, I started writing stories and poetry as soon as I learned the alphabet and I could hold a pencil.

Can you tell us about your story (or stories) in the anthology, Strange Portals? What inspired you to write it?

I love fantasy and sci-fi, but I rarely write short stories. ‘The Best Gift I Can Give’ is about a ballet dancer who has become quite arrogant about her ability. She idolizes her mother who died not long after she was born. She has a benefactor who pays for whatever she wants, including her lessons but he’s decided the best gift he can give her is to cut off her money. She has to get a job and can no longer afford expensive clothes. Along her journey, she makes friends for the first time in her life, and she eventually discovers who she really is, what her heritage is.

Please tell us about your other published work.

I write in fantasy/new age/spiritual/romance genres so my works vary. ‘Always’ is the story of two eternal beings and their circle of friends who come to Earth to gain lessons and accomplish missions. Simon (Einarr) is the main character who is 36-years-old. His best friend’s 16-year-old niece April is sure that she and Simon are meant to marry. Simon walks a fine line between avoiding her and insulting the family. This book is a roller coaster of emotions and sets the stage for a series of stories.

always

‘The Lone Hero’ is pure fantasy with romance sprinkled in. Einarr is born on the dragon home world of Aberforth with a specific mission – to end the dragon war. He’ll spend most of his life accomplishing this task. The 2nd in this series will be out soon. ‘Laurence of Dragon Fame’ is set in the 13th century and Einarr now must save the dragons from extinction on Earth.

The LONE HERO - 2000

‘Stepping Stones to Love Honor and Respect’ is a collection of my poetry ranging in several subject matters.

stones

‘Gingerbread Castle’ is a children’s holiday rhyme book about a secret fun place in dreamland.

What projects are you currently working on?

I’m working on several more books about Einarr and his friends, along with rewrites for ‘Laurence of Dragon Fame.’

Do you have a book recommendation to share with us?

I love most books so it’s hard to share just one, but I certainly think readers would love your book. I know I did. Also our ‘Strange Portals’ anthology. Every story in there was amazing, including yours. It would give the reader a variety of short stories, each unique.

What advice would you offer to new or aspiring authors?

Write, write, write. When it comes time to publish, take the jump but be sure that your book has been well edited.

Come, The Dark: Book Review

Come, the Dark: Cordovae’s Journey
Forever Girl #2
By Rebecca Hamilton

TRIGGER WARNING: This book deals with the sensitive subject of sexual abuse.

Rose desperately wants to escape the abuse of the father who impregnated her and the dark spirits that haunt her life. Being thrust from Georgia 1961 into the era of Salem’s infamous witch trials isn’t what she had in mind, and now her daughter is left hopelessly out of reach.

The only way to return to her daughter is by facing certain death to banish the dark spirits that plague Salem. If she doesn’t eliminate these dark spirits in time, they will destroy civilization and trap her in this strange new place, ages away from her daughter.

Even if she can complete the task in time to return home to save her daughter, there’s still one problem: she’s falling in love with a man who can’t return with her. Achieving her goals will force her to choose between the only man who has never betrayed her and a daughter she can’t quite remember but will never forget.

A heart-wrenching tale of a mother’s love for her daughter, this romantic paranormal fantasy underlines the depravity of both historical and modern society while capturing the essence of sacrifice and devotion.

Note: I received an ARC (pre-release copy of the book) in exchange for an honest review.

My Review: Rose had a happy childhood until the darkness came. The darkness caused her father to do unspeakable things, and made her mother turn a blind eye. The only bright spot in her bleak existence is Anna, a child conceived in darkness, but loved nonetheless. When Rose is suddenly transported to the past, she’ll do anything to get back to Anna. Rose is now known as Cordovae, and it’s not only her name that has changed. She has become Ankou and is in possession of powerful magic she would gladly trade if she could just hold Anna in her arms again. As Cordovae struggles to reconcile her memories of her life as Rose with her new, overwhelming identity, she must learn to fight to save the past so that she has a future to return to.

Come, the Dark definitely brings the darkness. The authors explores sexual abuse, loss, and hopelessness. Most of this story is set against the backdrop of the Salem Witch Trials, a time when anyone who was a little different lived in constant danger of being accused of witchcraft. For Cordovae, her attempts to blend in prove disastrous. She must rise above despair and learn to fight, not only for a chance to return to Anna, but to fulfill her destiny. As she gradually grows to care about (and even love) the people she’s met during her time in Salem, the idea of returning to Anna is fraught with pain.

Despite the dark themes and often hopeless situations Cordovae must face, there is always hope. Cordovae learns to fight no matter what. She never gives up on love. In many ways, Come, the Dark is vastly different from The Forever Girl. Yes, we still explore the rich world of elementals the author has created, a world of Chibold, Strigoi, Cruor, Ankou, and Morts, but the general atmosphere in this book is much heavier. This book is less about magic, and more about sheer determination and the power of love. For Cordovae, love is the driving force behind everything she does, and that’s what makes her a stand-out character. Beautifully written, Come, the Dark is a book I would whole-heartedly recommend to anyone looking for an engaging read.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
