Goddess of Night: Book Review

Goddess of Night (Amaranthine Book 9) by Joleene Naylor

51vvs2bat8vl

A war four-thousand years in the making.

In the mists of time, Lilith sealed her immortal lover away. Awakened, Samael has only one plan: revenge.

Linked to Samael and caught in the middle, Katelina watched as Lilith took both her best friend Sarah and a child vampire hostage. Now, it’s up to her and Jorick to get them back. Joined by a group more foe than friend, they search for the ancient vampiress, never dreaming the fight will come to them.

A horrific attack leaves Katelina’s hometown in ruins. Sightings say Sarah may have escaped, but with her mother in a coma, should Katelina go? Or should she stay? Will more destruction follow when Samael catches Lilith’s scent?

The final installment of the Amaranthine series raises the stakes. No longer the weak, terrified woman she was, Katelina will have to step up or lose everything she’s ever cared about.

My Review: What an amazing end to the Amaranthine saga. I’m just blown away by what Joleene Naylor has done with this series. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – this vampire series does NOT sparkle. The Amaranthine series is definitely for grownups. Raw, sometimes violent, sexy, and filled with twists and turns, the series as a whole is absolutely incredible. Goddess of Night is certainly no exception.

In this book, our heroine Katelina proves she is no longer a frightened human who is being shoved kicking and screaming from one bad situation to the next. She has taken control of her destiny and her life. She plunges headfirst into an all-out war between ancient vampires of unimaginable powers. What I love about Katelina is that even though she has become a strong fighter and a fearsome immortal, she still carries with her some of her human vulnerabilities. When it comes to relationships, she still sometimes makes decisions based on emotion instead of logic. I love the fact that, despite her enormous evolution as a character throughout this series, she is still Katelina. Of course, I have my favorite secondary characters, but among those who really stood out to me in this book were Micah (love him in this book!), Oren, Torina, and Zander.

For those who are familiar with this series, there are some serious shockers in Goddess of Night. Lives are lost, while others are changed beyond recognition. A huge betrayal leaves Katelina reeling. I finished reading this book two days ago, and I still can’t stop thinking about it. I even dreamed about it last night! Needless to say, I am more in love with the Amaranthine world than ever. Please, if you haven’t read this series, do yourself a favor and get started right now.

My Rating: 5 stars!!!

Book Review: Brothers of Darkness

unnamed

Patrick’s Story: Brothers of Darkness (Amaranthine Prequel)

By Joleene Naylor

The prequel to Shades of Gray tells the story of Patrick and Michael, how they got tangled into Claudius’ web, and their valiant fight to escape.

When Patrick’s missing brother Michael returns, he brings with him a world of darkness. Turned into a vampire against his will, Michael is the coven’s whipping boy. When Patrick tries to help, he’s claimed as a slave who spends his weekends preparing victims, scooping ashes, and falling prey to the vampire’s twisted desires.

There’s only so much hell he can take, and when vampires from a warring coven offer sanctuary in exchange for cooperation, Patrick quickly agrees. What he expected to be a few months drags out into a long smear of nightmares, and though he fights for hope and freedom, the cost of victory may be more than he bargained for.

My Review: This book is a must read for Amaranthine fans. Having read the series, I knew how this prequel would end, so it was painful falling in love with Patrick when I already knew his fate. This story is brutal, violent, and gory, but so important to the overall Amaranthine story. Having read it, I can’t imagine the series existing without this essential piece of the puzzle. Not only does this book give insight into Patrick’s characters and how Katelina is eventually dragged into the vampire world, it also gives valuable insight into Katelina’s and Jorick’s character. We truly see a side of these characters we never could have imagined. I so glad the author decided to write this book.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars. (I’d give it more if I could!)

Buy on Amazon. Or, start reading the series free by downloading Shades of Gray.

Excerpt from Dragon’s Fall: Rise of the Scarlet Order

Soon after Draco is turned into a vampire, he confronts Wolf, the vampire who made him:

“You brought me into this life that’s not life?” My words were clipped and I took several short steps toward him.

Again, he shook his head. “No, I merely fed off you. My only intention was to slake my thirst. You chose to attack me.”

Slowly, I sat down on the rocky ground. Even more questions churned and roiled in my mind. Finally, I practically screamed the one that kept coming to the forefront. “Am I doomed to live this way forever?”

For the first time, I saw something like a smile spread across Wolf’s features. “Perhaps not and perhaps fortune has led you to me.” He bade me come closer to the fire and he told me the story of an encounter he had had almost four hundred years before. He met a man traveling to Britain called Joseph of Arimathea. “Are you familiar with the one they call Christ?”

I nodded, remembering what my father told me about the Christians of his youth and about the teacher called St. Patrick. I recalled my conversation with Arthur about his shield and the image of Christ’s mother emblazoned on its front. “Those who follow him consider him a god, do they not?”

“Those that follow him say he is an incarnation of the one and only God,” corrected Wolf. “They say he has the power to forgive even the most heinous sins.” He went on to tell me about a cup and a scroll that Joseph of Arimathea carried. “The cup was used during Jesus’ last Passover feast. Some say it holds the blood of Christ himself, even to this day. Others say that you pour wine into it and it transforms into His blood. You are but a fledgling, but could you imagine what it would mean for one such as us to drink of that cup. If that is the blood of a god – of the God – and it contained forgiveness of the magnitude that is claimed.”

“You said there was also a scroll?” I asked. My mother had taught me to read Latin and that knowledge served me well. No doubt it helped bring me to the attention of Ambrosius, his daughter, and the first Dragons who instructed me. I loved to read but there was little of value to read.

“Joseph said that it contained the writings of Jesus himself.”

I let out a breath. Through my father, Arthur and others, I knew a little of the writings about Jesus. However, I’d never once heard that Jesus himself had left behind any writings. That would, indeed, be a treasure. “Why didn’t you simply take the cup when you had the chance?”

“It was guarded,” he said bitterly. He went on to describe the eagle-like creature that attacked him, preventing him from taking the chest that contained the scroll and the cup. “Over the centuries, I have encountered and heard many stories of creatures like that. Many take elemental forms, such as flames or water. Others take animal forms like this creature. Some people worship them as gods. I believe the Christians call these creatures, angels.”

“What can one do against such a creature?” I asked.

“They say these angels are immortal,” said Wolf, barring his fangs, “but I believe they can be wounded or even killed. I have been studying them over the centuries and I think I know a way. That’s why your becoming a Neuntoter may be particularly fortuitous.”

“So, where do we find this cup? This scroll?”

“All I know is that it’s here on the islands of Britain. I don’t know where to begin the search.”

“I may know someone that can help,” I said. Even as I thought of enlisting Bran and Arthur’s aid and seeing Guinevere again, I worried what she would think of my new sharp-toothed countenance along with my need to drink blood in order to survive.

Masque of the Vampire: A Review

Masque of the Vampire

Amaranthine Book 8

By Joleene Naylor

51nuntx6t8l

The eighth book in the Amaranthine series plunges back into darkness, steeped in superstitions and death, where vampires are once again vicious creatures of the night.

After three months away, Katelina and Jorick return home. But, so does Sarah, Katelina’s best friend everyone thought was dead. How did she survive being tortured – and killed – by vampires?

Though Sarah’s not eager to share the details, Katelina knows it’s the kind of story that leaves scars. She almost welcomes the distraction when they’re sent to guard an exclusive vampire party – until Sarah claims she’s being stalked. Who among the ancient guests would be interested in them?

Then they find a dead child with a missing heart, just like the murders in the Heartless killings. Is the serial killer a vampire – and a guest at the party? Could it have anything to do with their stalker, or is it simply too much evil in one place? When everyone seems suspicious, it’s hard to tell who the culprit is.

My Review:

Holy crap! Joleene Naylor is a genius. An evil genius who wrote an amazing, gripping, fabulous book, but isn’t releasing the next book until 2017. No!!! I have to know what happens next.

Masque of the Vampire takes us on a journey to Canada where Jorick (who is once again working as an Executioner, much to Katelina’s annoyance) has been assigned as security detail to a massive vampire party. A mass congregation of vampires, some of whom are at odds with one another, and all of whom have their own agendas… What could possibly go wrong? From dead bodies, to bizarre ancient rituals, to creepy twins, to daytime stalkers, this book is incredible.

Katelina has certainly evolved in this book. She’s more confident. She’s a fighter. And Jorick respects this. Yes, he’s still the protective Jorick we all know and love, but he has come to realize that Katelina wants equality in their relationship, and he is making a real effort to respect her independence. There are some new characters in this book as well.. Some creepy. Some secretive. All are complex. And worth the read.

I love the Amaranthine world this author has created. And, trust me. It’s an entire WORLD. The author has taken us all around the globe and with every journey, our knowledge of vampire culture expands. Ancient myths and folklore. Complex rules and laws. Vampire organizations. Old vendettas and grudges. It’s all here, right within the pages of these books. I can’t recommend this series enough. It is absolutely phenomenal in every way possible.

My Rating:

5 stars

Book of the Day: Rajveer the Vampire

Today’s Book of the Day is

Rajveer the Vampire

by Barbara G. Tarn

cdbdb446b24653ce8dd9414bfef5bfa326ad0e9a (1)

A “sun clan” warrior can never become a true child of darkness.

Turned into a bloodsucker by an ancient Celtic vampire, Rajveer, a proud Rajput warrior of a Suryavanshi clan in 14th century India, becomes almost invulnerable.

Immortal, he loses his family to war and time and travels through northern India, seeing history unfold. Threatened by both human wars and evil vampires, can he remain true to his sworn vow not to take human lives?

A vampire’s journey through centuries.

In this new novel, Barbara G.Tarn combines her love for history (especially medieval) and fantasy. It’s the story of a vampire through the centuries that will appeal to both historical fiction readers and vampire lovers all over the world.

*******

Excerpt from Rajveer the Vampire:

CHAPTER THREE

SISTER-IN-DARKNESS

Rajveer slowly adjusted to his new sleeping schedule. The king, Ratan Singh, wasn’t too happy to hear Rajveer would do all-night shifts from now on, but when Rajveer fell asleep in front of him, there wasn’t much choice. Rajveer just couldn’t keep his eyes open when the sun was up, and awoke only one hour before sunset, falling back to sleep one hour after dawn.

Soon he discovered Bran had been right. The more time passed, the less he needed to sleep when the sun was up. He allowed Bran and Kaylyn to move into his household as revered guests, and they performed what they called a western fertility rite on him and his wives.

Since his skin was warmer to the touch after he absorbed some blood, he made sure to feed before touching his wives. He could still eat normal food, so he could reassure them he was recovering, except for that strange day slumber from which he couldn’t be awakened, but that became shorter and shorter as the months marched on.

Unlike Kaylyn, he didn’t go hunting for old people who wished to die. He’d rather drain animals, and in fact prided himself he hadn’t tasted human blood yet. But if he went to bed without feeding first, his skin was too cold for any of his wives, so he had to make sure to drink at least from a small animal before making love to any of them.

He was neither dead nor alive. His body was supposedly dead, but he could still feel his heart beat and still had erections, although more from drinking blood than touching his wives. Sex felt different, not only because of his new thirst.

Enakshi was the more oblivious to his changes, since she’d just met him. Charumati was the most conscious, but she didn’t dare talk about it with anyone. Especially not Akshita and Nirmala, who would definitely bring up the old story of Jija’s daughter, lost to darkness.

Rajveer began to think there was some kind of truth in the story of the Jain merchant’s daughter, but she had probably killed herself since. If he refused to feed on human blood, her religion must have made her refuse to feed at all, therefore she must be dead.

Rajveer often struggled to feel. Even when he made love to his wives, sometimes he felt cold or detached and had to fight the need to bite them and suck their blood. Anguish often visited him when he was awake, and sometimes his lust felt more animal than human. His faith made him uneasy when he quenched his thirst and thought about it. And sometimes the mood changes were wiped away by a cold determination to survive at all costs that scared him.

All three wives stopped menstruating almost at the same time. Charumati miscarried after five months, Akshita after three. Kaylyn gave them herbs to recover faster, but Charumati didn’t appreciate the gesture.

“Why do you keep the foreigners here?” she asked with a frown. “Their rites don’t seem to work, and I don’t like the way Kaylyn looks at you.”

“She’s like a sister to me,” Rajveer assured her, holding her tight. “She’s here to help.”

“She’s here to steal my husband,” Charumati retorted. “I’m not blind, Rajveer! I can see how she looks at you! Are you planning on taking a fourth wife? Can you afford it?”

“No, I don’t plan on marrying Kaylyn, don’t worry.”

“I sure hope not,” Charumati grumbled. “She’s a wicked manushya-rakshasi.”

“I have never seen a manushya-rakshasi with blue eyes! Kaylyn is not from this country, as Bran isn’t!”

“Which only makes it worse! We don’t know what kinds of demons live in the west!”

“Charumati, Kaylyn is not a demon. And stop listening to Nirmala’s stories. You’re smarter than that.”

She glared at him for his chiding tone, and looked away. Rajveer recited his best love poem to her, but she knew it by heart by now, and it didn’t improve her mood. She actually shooed him out of her bedroom, saying she was tired and wanted to be alone.

The king had bestowed a fortune on him when he’d written the series of beautiful poems that had also caught Bran’s attention, but since the blond foreigner had given him the dark gift, his poetic vein seemed to have gone dry – which worried him a little, since it seemed he must woo Charumati again.

Telling her how much he loved her didn’t seem enough anymore. His feelings often felt muted by his thirst for blood. There were times he saw other humans only as prey. He was beginning to think Bran’s dark gifts were actually a curse worse than dying without a male son to perform his funeral rites – which would turn him into a gayal. He couldn’t decide what was worse between restless spirit or bloodsucker.

He learned to feed all night long on little animals so he wouldn’t wake up hungry and scare Charumati away.

by Joleene Naylor

When Patrick is murdered, Katelina is left with questions. Jorick, one of his so-called friends, has answers of the darkest kind: Patrick was involved with – and betrayed – a coven of vampires; vampires that may now be after Katelina.

The tale is fantastic, but the proof appears in a flash of fangs that Katelina and Jorick only just escape. Taken to a secret mansion, she discovers horror in its halls and learns the truth about her protector. Blood and destruction follow, and leave scars Katelina may never heal from.

The disturbing opener to the Amaranthine series pulls Katelina into darkness that tastes like fear and smells like blood, a world where night is eternal and vampires don’t sparkle.
